The 2019 Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF

This year's Sun Life Toronto Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF was at CANADA'S FREAKING WONDERLAND, and I really enjoyed participating in it and seeing all the people who came out to show their support!

The Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes for JDRF brings together 35,000 Canadians across sixty communities in the country affected by Type 1 diabetes -- T1Diabetics, their siblings, their friends, their cousins, their aunts, their uncles, their parents, their Scout leaders, their teachers -- to unite, get loud, and raise money to accelerate the pace of Type 1 diabetes research.

The Toronto Walk raised about $450,000 this year!

A bunch of my family and friends came out to walk with me, which I greatly appreciated and enjoyed!

There were 3,000 participants in the Toronto Walk this year!

The weather was absolutely perfect! Not too hot, not too cold.

All in all, it was just an incredible experience. Everyone we met was really enthusiastic and excited about all the funds being raised, and about the awareness for Type 1 that was being raised as well. In my opinion, raising awareness is just as important as raising money for research.

Awareness means that, until there's a cure for Type 1, T1Diabetics can do what we need to do in public (like injections and site changes and whatnot) and have the people around us understand why we need to do those things. Why we carry a bag, give ourselves needles, wear devices, eat cake in gym class, etc. Since awareness is a really great thing, I was really excited to see how many people were wearing diabetes T-shirts (shirts with jokes about Type 1 on them), explaining about Type 1 to people who happened to be at Wonderland but weren't participating in the Walk and didn't know what it was, taking lots of pictures to put on social media, explaining about their insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, and were very open about what was going on.

Looking forward to next year's Walk, and am very thankful to have been a part of this year's Walk! It is an event that I would definitely recommend, especially to newly diagnosed T1Diabetics and their families. Learn more about the Walk by clicking here!
